Ron Montero Distillery Tour Motril – Wednesday, February 25 – No Cost

On 25 February we will be meeting at 12:45pm in the parking lot at the Ron Montero Distillery for a free tour.  (Ron Montero, N-323 68, 18613 Motril, Granada.)  We will be breaking into two groups for the tour.  Group 1 will start the tour at the sugarcane field and Group 2 will start the tour in the factory.

Ron Montero is a family-owned distillery located in Motril. Founded in 1963 by Francisco Montero Martín, it’s one of the last remaining rum distilleries in mainland Europe still producing authentic Spanish-style rum.  The tour includes:

·  Introduction to the legacy of Francisco Montero and the history of sugarcane in the Costa Tropical region.

• Overview of rum heritage dating back to the 15th century along with an authentic recreation of the sugarcane fields and tools used in them.

·  Production Process

• Learn how molasses is transformed into rum.
• Step-by-step explanation of fermentation, distillation, and barrel aging in American oak casks.

·  Aging Cellars (“Bodegas”)

• Visit the dark, aromatic barrel rooms where different rums mature.
• Insight into the solera aging method used for blending.

·  Rum Tasting

• Guided tasting of their main varieties, like:
  • Ron Pálido (Light Rum)
  • Ron Plata (Silver Rum)
  • Ron Francisco Montero Gran Reserva
• Staff explain tasting notes and pairing ideas.

·  Shop Visit

• Opportunity to purchase bottles not always available in stores, plus branded merchandise.  I would guess that since the tour is free, much of what they make comes from the discounts on packages of rum they offer.  We have one package from our last visit that was a savings over buying them individually at a store.

Great location next to the golf course and the beach. Sit quietly under the palm trees for a drink and tapas or something more elaborate with a delicious breakfast or lunch. Cozy and friendly atmosphere. Service is very friendly and attentive. Large portions for very reasonable prices. The range of dishes is very varied, so something for everyone.
