🎤 Terry’s Talk: A Fond Farewell

Terry’s talk on Wednesday was a great success! Impeccably delivered, entertaining and educational, it brought history to life for an audience of 60+.

Sadly, this was Terry’s final speaker appearance for ICS. Over an impressive 14-year tenure, he covered 6 subject areas and delivered a total of 15 talks. He received a small gift from the club as a token of our appreciation, and Terry would like to say how much he appreciated the gesture.

Thanks for the memories, Terry! 👏

🏛️ Jaén: A Trip to Remember

Our trip to Jaén last Thursday was thoroughly enjoyable. The Arab Baths were particularly impressive, the museum was packed with fascinating artefacts, and the cathedral was mesmerising in both its scale and design.

Our guide was superb, too, sharing a wealth of facts and anecdotes with great knowledge and empathy. All in all, a wonderful day out and highly recommended! ⭐

🚴 ON YER BIKE!
Our bike ride will take place on Thursday 27 October. We’ll be cycling a 22 km route around Salobreña, taking things at a leisurely pace.

Discover the local agricultural heritage along the “Ruta de las Frutas Tropicales”! This easy-going, fully signposted trail conveniently links La Caleta, La Guardia, Salobreña’s town center, the lively promenade, the scenic Guadalfeo River banks, Lobres, and the Colada de la Costa a la Sierra. Along the way, you’ll cycle past lush plantations of custard apples, mangoes, avocados, and papayas while soaking in fantastic botanical sights and local history.

📍 Meeting point: 10.30 am, by the petanca pitches at Parque Fuente, Salobreña.

🚲 Bike hire: Bikes are available from TrujBike, Av. del Mediterraneo, 22, at a cost of €35.

Don’t worry if 22 km sounds a bit daunting — you can stop whenever you need to, so there’s no pressure to complete the whole route. The idea is to enjoy the ride, get some fresh air and have a good time!

🌺 POPPY APPEAL
It’s that time of year when we pause to remember those who lost their lives in conflicts over the years. In the UK, Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November this year, and the familiar red poppy remains a powerful symbol of remembrance and respect.

Our own George Chaney has been collecting money for the Poppy Appeal and has shared the following message with us.

George writes:

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

“In the next three weeks, The Royal British Legion will be selling poppies worldwide in remembrance of those who have given their lives in past conflicts. I will be present at meetings with our Poppy box, up until the 11th day of the 11th month, at 11 o’clock. Please give generously. Thank you.”

A big thank you to George for supporting this important cause, and to everyone who contributes. ❤️

🎨 ART CLUB – HALLOWEEN WORKSHOP 🎃
Things are getting spooky at the Art Club this week!

This Tuesday, the group will be holding a Halloween workshop, creating items inspired by this wonderfully ghoulish time of year.

Then, on Halloween itself, we’ll be hosting a murder mystery event at Bar Amigos and handing out treats to passing children.

Creative fun, a little mystery and hopefully no real murders! 👻

🧹 CLEAN-UP NEWS
I had planned to organise our next clean-up this month, but my proposed date clashes with the clean-up organised by Fundación Miguel García and the Ayuntamiento.

Rather than compete for volunteers, I’ll move our own clean-up to early November. More details to follow!

So, what exactly is plogging? It’s a combination of the Swedish verb plocka upp (meaning “to pick up”) and the English word “jogging”. Essentially, it means picking up litter while out exercising.

Although, I suspect there may be considerably more picking up than jogging! 😄

🎲 GAMES DAY – LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
This Wednesday, we’re heading to the hotel for a fun-filled Games Day! 🥳

There’ll be plenty to get involved in, with games including Cornhole, Stakk and Hi-Tower, among others. Whether you’re feeling competitive or just fancy a bit of fun, there should be something for everyone!

Prefer a quieter challenge? No problem! We’ll also be holding an indoor Scrabble competition for those who prefer to exercise their brains rather than their throwing arms! 🧠🔤

So come along, join in the fun, test your skills and enjoy a bit of friendly competition. Just remember — it’s all fun and games until someone takes the Scrabble dictionary too seriously! 😄

⚽ FOOTBALL – GRANADA DE MI ALMA!
The ICS Crew attended Granada CF´s magnificent 2-0 victory against Cádiz CF today. A great performance. We were a group of nine at the game in blazing sunshine. Rain? What rain?
