We are delighted to invite you on another excursion into the history of Andalucia…

Bienvenidos a Jaén, the heart of Andalusia’s olive country!

This charming city is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. With its Renaissance architecture, sweeping olive groves, and rich history, Jaén offers a unique blend of cultural and natural attractions.

We are planning a day trip by coach from Salobreña on Tuesday 30 April

Itinerary

We anticipate leaving Salobreña at 9:00am.

A pick up in Velez De Benaudalla en route then continuing to Jaen.

We do not anticipate having a break en route as we will arrive in Jaen around 10:45am.

For the morning we have the services of our own guide who will accompany us as we explore the highlights of the city:

  • Panoramic bus tour along the castle’s ring road (without going up to the castle) to the Tourist Bus Parking of the Infanta Leonor Theatre
  • Walk through the Barrio de la Magdalena, the oldest and one of the most emblematic neighborhoods in Jaén, steeped in history and brimming with legends. Known locally as “La Malena” or the Arab quarter, it’s a place where the past resonates through its narrow, winding streets and sometimes stepped pathways. Plaza de la Magadalena, with the Church of La Magdalena (exterior) and Legend of the mythical Lizard of Jaén, Convent of Santo Domingo (Cloister)
  • Villardompardo Palace, with the Arab Baths for a glimpse into the city’s Moorish past and the Museum of Popular Customs, a fascinating place that showcases the pre-industrial ways of life in the province. It features a collection of traditional objects and items from times before industrialization. we can explore various exhibition rooms displaying ceramics, farm tools, typical clothing, games, furniture, looms, and more.
  • It is anticipated that the tour will take around three hours.

When our guided tour is over we break for lunch and you are free to choose whichever of the bars and restaurants that are available to you for your preferred lunch. We will have around 2 hours for lunch.

After lunch (around 4:00pm) we will rejoin our coach and drive up to the Castillo De Santa Catalina for a visit.

Initially, in the 9th century, It was a Caliphal fortress established strategically on the hill. This fortress underwent significant changes after the Christian conquest of the city by King Ferdinand III in 1246. It was then that the Christian castle, which we see today as part of the Parador Nacional de Jaén, was constructed.

This transformation reflects the rich tapestry of Spanish history, where Islamic and Christian influences are interwoven, particularly in Andalusia.

After the visit of the castle (around 5:00pm), we will pop into the Parador Hotel Cafeteria for a welcome coffee and a break before making our way home at 5:30pm

We anticipate arriving back in Salobreña at around 7:00pm.
