ROMERÍA DE LA VIRGEN DEL ROSARIO – A GREAT DAY IN SALOBREÑA
What a really nice we had today at this year’s Romería de la Virgen del Rosario in Salobreña!
The rain that threatened never happened, and members very generously brought along lots of tasty treats and refreshments. The highlight being Dave Barrow’s delicious Paella cooked on site, followed by Ricardo Ibañez Atlet´s exquisite Argentine style pancakes.
As always, the town was full of colour, music and celebration as locals and visitors came together to enjoy this much-loved traditional festival. The horses and riders, colourful parades, decorated floats, food stands and lively atmosphere made it a wonderful opportunity to experience one of Salobreña’s most enjoyable annual celebrations.

The ICS was delighted to be part of it, with our own stand where we served food and drinks and, of course, talked to lots of people about the International Club of Salobreña.
It was great to see so many familiar faces dropping by to say hello, as well as meeting people who were new to ICS and interested in finding out more about the club.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise the ICS stand. Events like this don’t happen without volunteers giving up their time, and I really appreciate everyone who helped make the day such a success.
¡Viva la Romería de la Virgen!
KITTY BAKE
Once again, we had a successful Kitty Bake, with €307 (hopefully more to come!) raised for homeless cats. Two charities will share the money raised: Homelucats Salobreña and Maria Angels.
Thanks to Lesley for all her hard work, and of course to all the bakers who contributed. It’s much appreciated.

PUB QUIZ
So happy to see 40+ people show up for the Pub Quiz at Bar Amigos. It was a brilliant evening. Lots of members were there, and the winning team, Los Tontos, included members Elisabeth S, Pini H and Marianne C.
Thanks to Paula and Daniel for being excellent hosts, and Sarah for the impromptu entertainment!
PETANCAS
Great turnout for the Petancas too, with 23 players and a few spectators.
There will be a major trophy presentation next Friday, where three monthly champions Peter Gay, DJ Bernardo and Teresa Deasy(May, June and September) will receive their trophies, a certificate, a free pizza voucher and rapturous applause!

I learned some sad news today about the passing of Pepe Rodriguez (94), a local man who often played with us. He was a very kind individual who was always ready to impart his knowledge on the finer points of the game, and a bit of a character too.
RIP Pepe.
OTHER MINI CLUBS
Other activities, such as the Art Club, Ukulele Strumblies and Maj Jong continue to be very popular too.
The Strumblies will be playing their Christmas set at the hotel some time in early December, and hopefully for Los Nordicos in Almunecar at dates to be determined.
MONTHLY WALK
Guide Martin Riley writes:
“We had 13 club members on the first walk of the season on Thursday, which took us around the campo area just inland of Salobreña. Due to work on a couple of sections of track, we had to change some of the route at the last minute, but it still passed through some interesting scenery.
Notable wildlife sightings were a string of egrets perched on a cable and a booted eagle circling just above the river.
10km and 100m of ascent.”
I know a number of members were unable to make it this time – it would be great to see you next month, the first Thursday in November.
HOTEL MEET
This Wednesday will see a book swap, always a popular event, and a badge prize draw. The three winning prizes will be EuroMillions lottery tickets: 3, 2 and 1 line respectively.
We will also have our first Spanish conversation sessions with member Virginia Tapia. If you are interested in joining the conversation, please drop me a line. All levels welcome.
CLEAN-UP
I’m planning a clean-up for Sunday 25 October. Six people have signed up so far.
If you have any suggestions for areas that are particularly litter-strewn, let me know. Hi-vis jackets, gloves, bags and pickers will be supplied.
Let me know if you want to join in.
JAÉN TRIP
Just three tickets left for this event on 15 October.

TERRY TALK
Don’t forget the upcoming talk from Terry Everett, with his third and final instalment on The Age of Discovery, on Wednesday 14 October at the hotel.
If you haven’t witnessed them before, Terry’s talks are incredibly well researched and impeccably presented.
Make a note in your diary.
NOCHEVIEJA SENIOR
Mark Clifton would like to remind everyone about the Nochevieja Senior, a special New Year celebration aimed at the town’s older residents.
If you fancy celebrating New Year’s Eve somewhere a little more glamorous than the sofa, Hotel Salobreña Suites is the place to be!
For €75, the evening includes an impressive festive dinner, cava, the traditional uvas de la suerte at midnight, music and a courtesy bus. Drinks are not included and are charged at €8 per glass.
The menu certainly sounds like they haven’t skimped: foie, smoked salmon, confit cod, duck confit, seafood, sorbet and a chocolate, strawberry and cream dessert – followed, naturally, by the grapes and the arrival of 2027.

Places are limited, so anyone interested should book directly with Hotel Salobreña Suites.
I will post the flyer/menu on the club’s Facebook pages.
BIKE RIDE AND GRANADA CF FOOTBALL MATCH
Still looking for people to join these two proposed events. Drop me a line if interested for more details
