Another excellent turnout at the hotel last Wednesday, with more than 50 members joining us. Great to see so many familiar faces!
Monthly Book Swap Our monthly book swap was in full swing. A big shout out to Elizabeth Eyles, who arrived with an enormous pile of books. Clearly, a member who takes her reading seriously! Badge Prize Draw This month’s lucky winners were Keith Horton, Ursula Leinhard and Sian Hopkins. Congratulations to all three! Spanish Conversation We held our first Spanish conversation session last week, and it was great to see ten members joining Virginia Tapia for the conversation. Everyone was at a different stage in their Spanish-learning journey, but Virginia navigated the session with aplomb. If you’d like to join in, just drop me a line. Sessions take place at the hotel every Wednesday.
WINTER LUNCH
This year’s winter lunch will once again take place in Pradollano, up in the snowy Sierra Nevada on Wednesday 16 December. As last year, the package will include transport, a meal and two complimentary drinks. We expect the cost to be around €50 per member, although we’re still crunching the numbers! For those who haven’t joined us before, the food is top-notch and the setting is delightful. Definitely one to look forward to! Full details will be on the website soon. The lunch will also mark the beginning of our winter break. We expect to return in January, with the AGM pencilled in for Wednesday 20 January (date to be confirmed).
TERRY’S TALK: THE AGE OF DISCOVERY
The Age of Discovery is finally upon us! Terry Everett will be giving his third and final talk on this subject in the Velilla Room, at the far end of the hotel near the restaurant. Head down the steps to find us. Start: 11:30 am Duration: Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
Terry writes: “Well, this coming Wednesday will bring to an end my three-part trilogy of the ‘Age ofDiscovery’. Parts one and two covered the main men who did so much to ‘open up’ the world for those to follow, men such as Amerigo Vespucci, Vasco De Gama,Ferdinand Magellan, Juan Sebastion Elcano and, of course, Christopher Columbus. In the case of Columbus, last year, I covered his early life and his first two voyages across the Atlantic Ocean.
On Wednesday we will finish with Columbus’s last two voyages, his passing and what happened to him after his death in 1506, a few surprises there!
I hope that those of you that came along for the first two talks will join me again for the finale. Although I have always had a keen interest in this area of history, it has been an immense joy for me digging deep into the subject in an effort to abstract those little details that, I hope, have enhanced the story of these courageous men who sailed into the unknown against great adversity.
Look forward to seeing you on Wednesday“

SALOBREÑA TOURIST DAY
Something I forgot to mention last week was that Salobreña celebrated its “Tourist Day” ahead of the international World Tourism Day on Sunday 27 September.
Members Don Cameron and Javier Sicart Marti were on hand to represent the ICS. Not sure who the lady in the sandwich is!
ICS ON YOUTUBE
Over the course of the year, I’ve been posting videos on YouTube to showcase what we get up to as a club and, just as importantly, to keep a record of our activities. I particularly enjoy including interviews, giving people a chance to put faces to names and get to know some of our members. The response has been somewhat underwhelming, though. Not a single comment all year! Perhaps it’s those pesky adverts, or maybe the videos are a little too long. Facebook photos, on the other hand, seem to attract considerably more attention. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to produce a video of this year’s Romería, which was a shame. I’d genuinely welcome your thoughts on how best to showcase ICS on social media. And if anyone has experience in this area and fancies taking on the role of ICS Social Media Manager, I’d be delighted to hear from you. Any volunteers?
OTHER TIDBITS
Nochevieja Senior – A Small but Important Clarification Following last week’s newsletter about the Nochevieja Senior New Year celebration, member Michael Bamford has pointed out that last year’s courtesy bus service covered Salobreña only, not Almuñécar. Something worth bearing in mind when making your plans. Hotel Closure in January Hotel Salobreña Suites will be closed for maintenance from 3 to 17 January.
NEW MEMBERS
